Eastern Bypass Accidents Cardiff

Posted in Community, General, Lifestyle

Has anyone noticed recently the amount of Car Accidents there seems to be along the stretch of road on the outskirts of Cardiff called Eastern Bypass? – Not so long ago they reduced the speed limit from 70mph to 50mph as they narrowed the lanes in order to fit a Bus Lane from the Pentwyn to llanedeyrn Junction. The narrowed lanes were part of a project to allow commuters to park on the outer part of the city and to catch a dedicated bus into the city.

I have found that over the last few months many people drive above 50mph.. and often 70mph as this used to be the previous limit. Now the dangerous bit is that when coming down a slip road onto the carriage way, many people have driven at 50mph or even as low as 40mph onto the main road when people are above this… creating a situation of either going into the back of the car in front or even struggling to join the road safely.

Now I haven’t done much investigation into the recent car accidents on the road but I will and see if there’s a pattern between the accidents and the 50mph speed limit. Share your experiences below, I’d really like to hear from you.

May Ball 2010 Aberystwyth University

This year I thought I would attend yet again Aberystwyth University’s May Ball and here are my views on how it compared to last year and some information for people wishing to attend in future years.

Ticket Price this year remained the same at £40 per person, you purchase the ticket beforehand and exchange it on the way for a wristband which gives you entry to the event… funfair etc. The price of drinks though didn’t remain the same, last year I’m confident it was £2per drinks token (updated) which could be exchange for drinks.. of course some drinks such as Vodka Red Bull (Double) were about 2 vouchers worth.. however this year it was 4 vouchers for £10… meaning £2.50 per drink! – A double Jagermeister + Red Bull.. would set you back 2 tokens = £5. Pricey! – Although hosted by the Students Union they felt to charge more for drinks at the event ‘May Ball’ than the usual nights at the Union.

3000 tickets x £40 each, £120,000 – A lot of ticket revenue.

Transport

Last year we turned up early and were able to get on the coach with a little queue. This year due to an accident where a coach hit the front of an oncoming car (luckily no one injured)… the queue a result of this was over 40 minutes… wrapping around the Visualisation Centre on penglais campus, lots of glass bottles of alcohol were littered all over the place and thankfully the building was open to allow people to use the toilets, can you image if it wasn’t?

Also on the way back from the event (after 2am)… about 3 girls got off the coach for one to be sick and the coach driver closed the door and carried on to Aberystwyth. I have no clue if the girls lived nearby on the outskirts of Aberystwyth in the middle of nowhere or if they were just left for another coach to pickup.

A few people were getting Taxis to the event, not sure how much they would cost from Aberystwyth but might be something to look into if there are large queues in future years but of course coach travel is part of the £40 ticket for too and from the event.

The Acts

The main acts were Feeder and S Club7 (well 3 out of 7) and were really good in the variety of the music that they played. There were also a few other things going on such as Westwood in the early hours of the morning…. a few DJs etc. There were also a few tents outside of the main venue where they had a headphone disco, blackhouse and also a lounge where they had an Oxygen Bar.

The Fun Fair

The fun fair contained about 4 rides, they were the bumper cars (always fun), the Waltzer, Mad Max and the Sizzler. There were also a few stalls where you could pay extra and win a few things. They did have a Bungee jump for the brave.. or stupid? – this was an extra cost of £30 per person on the night if you wanted to do it.

The Food

There was quite a selection of food for people to purchase on the night. There were a few catering vans which sold the usual chips, burgers, hot dogs and carnival food. (candy floss and stick dummies). There was also a catering tent which sold Pizza, Pasta and curry and rice. So a good mixture! Also this was an added extra and not part of the ticket price.

The Weather

The weather was pretty good, quite chilly when the sun went down but stayed dry until about 1.30amish – at which point started to rain.
