Once again the Post Office in Aberystwyth is the centre of attention of a proposed redevelopment. This comes after the masterplan of Aberystwyth was scrapped with the new proposal for the site highlighting a 5 storey building consisting of 2 floors of sales space and 3 floors of flats.
Abrystwyth in recent years has had problems with the limited amount of accommodation as well as a declining retail area. There seems to be a real need to encourage growth and development in these areas but as any development in a small town there are always protests for and against. Trying not to lose the historic village feel but with keeping with the times.
Although the plans are being backed by the Aberystwyth chamber of commerce, I still feel this is one plan we haven’t heard the last of and will no doubt get changed along the way. Looking positively Next the retail giant has said it will be opening a store at the empty Richley’s store near Morrisons/Mc Donalds.

Back in 2007 I had a part-time job working at Comet (Newport Road) and often remember discussing the Currys and PCWorld store just down the road, how out of date it was, how unhelpful the staff are, out of stock items and appearance of products. We were proud to be working for Comet with a large store, new makeover and a wide variety of products and felt at the time that the other electrical retailer close by was no competitor of ours.
I wrote an article sometime ago about the Currys and PCWorld store along Newport road starting their phase of knocking the two stores together. Today I had the pleasure of visiting the store and must say it’s impressive. The new mega store comprises both stores in a new layout, visual appearance of products on stands along with the mega brand. It’s far better than the previous stores as it has been brought up to today’s high stands of retail. I have taken a couple of photos of the store, however you need to visit it yourself to have the full experience.
I started this article off with the opinion of the old store and I can’t help but think that Comet down the road are being driven crazy by this new makeover. This new brand position of the Dixon group ‘Mega Store’ is definitely a competitor that they should be keeping an eye out for.

It was reported in Today’s Wales Online that the Cardiff Council are proposing to tie people into a 12 month contract on their ‘Active Cards’. Active Cards are membership cards in which you may a monthly fee of up to £29 per month to have unlimited use of the council’s leisure facilities… swimming, gym… badminton etc. At the moment members are can cancel this membership at any time after 1 month and in 2009 the majority of people cancelled their membership after six months.
This has sparked the council to tie people into longer term contract of 12 months as they have been losing large amounts of revenue and with so many gyms being recently refurbished, they aren’t seeing any return on their investment.
As a current Active user I must say that I wouldn’t welcome a 12 month contract, firstly I’m a student and so I’m only at home during the summer and Christmas. This means I only use the gym at Pentwyn and Roath Leisure Centre during the holidays and only have an Active Card in the summer. If I were told I’d have to be in a contract then it isn’t worth me taking out an Active card as I’m only here for 3 months. I would more than likely look for a cheaper alternative in privately owned gym or would invest in the equipment myself. It isn’t worth me paying £3.95 every time I go due to how many times I’d use the facilities per week. Although the card offers savings already, perhaps further savings would encourage people to join for a fixed term. Perhaps £24 per month over 12 months?
As mentioned some council owned facilities have undergone some refurbishment. So you end up paying the same amount of money for £000s worth of equipment at say Roath as you do at Eastern Leisure centre.
The bicycles at Roath have state of the art.. almost like a game with the monitor and game interface which allows you to choose a circuit to travel around as well as water powered rowing machines . At Pentwyn you row with the air and look up at the CRT monitors to watch music videos.
