Apart from the union and the arts centre, where is there to drink on Penglais campus?
Cwrt Mawr bar of course! Situated next to Cwrt Mawr reception, the bar isn’t big, but it’s a nice warming size. What I mean by this is that you can find who you’re with, with ease, you feel closer to the people you’re with as you’re not miles away from each other. You can actually have a conversation without loud music getting in the way.
It has a 2 snooker tables, darts board and some game machines. There is also a jukebox so you can pick your favourite tune and have a little boogie with your friends.
The bar holds quizzes every Sunday night, and puts of sports for those who are interested in that sort of pastime. They also do drink offers and is the place to go for hand-stamps to gain entry for the union for cheaper.
Make the most of having this bar on your doorstep, I wish I had.
Three years of study are finally over with the build up to Graduation Week 2011 at Aberystwyth University. I say finally as if three years has dragged out but it really hasn’t. I’m shocked at how quick it has come.
It feels like yesterday when I was being dropped off at my halls of residence. A quick unpack, take advantage of the parents and get the biggest shopping trip in out of the way and, then shoving them out of the door so that I could get on and make new friends.
Facebook has been a great way to keep in touch with people. Before University it allowed me to talk to people about to head to Aberystwyth and share ideas on what to pack and what to expect. My friends list has boomed since studying here and no doubt will keep in contact with many of these people for years to come.
Graduation Ceremony
Commencing the week of 11th July 2011. Aberystwyth University’s Graduation took place within the Great Hall at Aberystwyth Arts Centre. A suburb venue, especially after a recent refit it added to the experience. The weather was brilliant providing photograph opportunities around the back of the centre on the grass area.
Ceremonies are held either in the morning (11am) or in the afternoon (3pm).
Graduands must register at the Arts Centre before their ceremony where they will be given a seat number. After or before this you may collect your Graduation gown from Theatre, TV and Film building (Parry Williams). A rehearsal will take place for students before the start time of the ceremony.
If you find you’ve been unable to get additional tickets to sit in and watch then wait until everyone has gone in and then ask at the door if there are any spare seats. There were a few empty seats this year. If you’re unable to watch in the great hall then the Arts Centre stream live footage of the ceremony to the cinema.
Students (Graduands) will be called up in groups of around six. Names will be checked and read out whilst you tip your hat to the vice-chancellor. It’s a shame that there’s no hand shaking or scroll.

Graduating this year? – What will you take away with you from your experience at Aberystwyth?
Now that I’ve finished my education at university I can’t help but think what would I have done differently.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my 3 years and met people I’ll never forget! I had my experience of students and grown up life with nights out to sorting out the dreaded bills!
My one regret was not going out as much as I could have. I enjoyed staying in and watching films and I tried to go to as many as the union events as I could, but I feel like I neglected the town side of a night out.
I think most of this was down to money, I didn’t feel as if I had enough money to go out into town and pay their prices, so I stuck with pound parties at the union.
I know that when I go back for a reunion I’ll definitely make the most of it.
It wasn’t all about the night life though. During free time, myself and Rhys Gregory went exploring the surrounding area and towns. Which I would recommend to anybody visiting the area. I’m glad we did it, because I know many people that just spent 3 years and didn’t even know about the place I had been.
This isn’t new, Aberystwyth University and the town has been struggling to cope with the increased intake of students each year. Back in 2008, students were put up in hotels...
With the News of the World Newspaper brand coming under fire lately it was still a shock to see Murdoch completely get rid of it. As new scandals emerge...
