Old St Mellons Summer Fete 2010

Posted on - 11th July 2010

The annual summer fete in Old St Mellons was held yesterday on the community playfield was organised by the Village Association. The weather was dry which helped to draw in people from the surrounding areas which created a very warming community atmosphere. You couldn’t help but bump into distance friends and relatives, which wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for village fete which helped to reconnect ties as well as create new ones.

The fete boasted a wide variety of stalls from tea and cake stands to a magic show for the enter family to enjoy. Refreshments were available as well as hot food and ice-creams galore, Jane Rogers, a local County Councillor for the area was right about recommending not having a large lunch! – as there was so much to choose from. The Winner of the Best Stalls went to the Arts Group, Cakes Stand and also the Klip Joint Barbers.

The great thing about these community fetes is that it gives the opportunity to both residents and visitors to learn more about the area but also the different groups and clubs. I have been volunteering in the village for over 4 years now and hadn’t known about the existence of the local Arts Group until today. It isn’t just a place to buy and sell cakes, it helps to open up and share the community with others.

It was also great to see the local Bobby’s make an appearance as well as the local Fire Brigade which helped to bridge residents with local help and support services. Local County Councillors Jane Rogers and Dianne Rees (also the newly appointed Deputy Lord Mayor) were there to only open the fete but also to engage with residents on important issues. Jonathan Morgan (Cardiff North AM) also was on hand to answer any questions and also to support the fete.

It was also fantastic to see people making the most out of the Playing Field & Park refurbishments. For more information on the facilities in Old St Mellons, more info: http://www.rhys.eu/index.php/2010/07/playing-field-refurbishment/
