Cleaning Halls of Residence
If you’re staying at halls of residence (Aberystwyth University) then you’ll be subject to inspections each term. I do believe in previous years it has be one per term for ‘room’ inspections but more frequent inspections are made just of the communal areas such as bathrooms, toilets and kitchens. You will be told in your accommodation pack when you arrive when the inspections will be made so don’t worry. Although it might seem odd and perhaps strict to have inspections but honestly they’re not that bad and usual relate to general tidiness… so if you’re not messy, letting produce rot or go mouldy or leave the place in a general mess then you’ll be fine, don’t worry!
However I have put a simple guide together on cleaning at halls of residence with the help of Nicholas Reeves, some students may not have cleaned for themselves before and also might be useful to know what is expected of you whilst staying in halls. In extreme circumstances the house/flat might be charged for cleaning, this will come off your deposit and will be notified of this but usually they’ll give you a warning and give you a chance to tidy up and will re-inspect the property the following day. Charges can be up £25ish per hour of cleaning.
Nicholas has some input on cleaning kitchens.
1) Don’t leave washing up lying around otherwise it will just stack up and make the kitchen genuinely unpleasant. Do the washing up once you’ve finished with it rather than just eating your dinner and then going off to play COD/ FIFA or watch TV.
2) If you find yourself struggling to keep the kitchen clean, get into
contact with the Residential Services who will help you set up a rota
system if necessary. If you find yourself repeatedly failing inspections, you can ask them to send someone to visit you and point out to you where you are getting things wrong.
3) As you will know, the porters come round weekly to carry out fire
safety checks, they will also let the Residence Management know if the kitchen is a mess so assume these fire checks are a second kitchen inspection.
4) Finally, whenever you go to Morrisons or CKs, buy things like Cif and
Mr Muscle as they are fairly cheap. If you can afford a big night out at Why Not, Pier Pressure or Re-Load then you can most certainly afford cleaning materials.
Rhys Gregory – From personal experience we try and get each person in our flat/house to do a different area each time an inspection is due… it usually works but of course some people might have more work on than others and use that as an excuse not clean… although it doesn’t take long. I’m not the type of person to clean other peoples stuff so it’s good that everyone aims to clean after themselves… wipe down the bath/shower after use… put your own pots and pans away, if you spill something.. then clean it up there and then. Some students also take it in turns to buy cleaning products.. although I always had a secret stash for cleaning my room.
Personal Room
It’s also good to keep your own room clean and tidy. You can use the computer room closest to you whether that be the PJM Lounge, Rosser Lounge or the Library however at some point you’ll want to do work in your room, therefore if you keep it tidy and organised and Hoover regularly you’ll be motivated to work harder! Be proud of your room! – especially if you want friends around to watch a film or something. Washing your bed sheets every couple or few weeks would also be good. Just use one of the wash rooms closest to you.
