Shopping Centre Development Scrapped – Aberystwyth
I noticed this article the other week but I have only just had time to write anything about it.
The Aberystwyth Shopping Centre Development is to be scrapped due to the Welsh Assembly backing out saying that it cannot afford to fund it.
I was quite saddened to see that the article on the Cambrian news said that campaigners were celebrating after hearing the development won’t be going ahead.
I feel that it is a blow to the Aberystwyth Economy and effects of this are starting to be felt already with local businesses claiming a 20% fall in revenue.
Although part of me feels that it would have taken away that small town feel, Aberystwyth is considered to be one of the largest towns in this area for miles and I think that the development would have been good to make it a more central point along the coast-line.
The town already has a few out of town businesses such as Morrisons, Currys, Halfords etc and I think these businesses are what the town needs to create jobs and to continue the flow of income. I think the town has been over-run with Cafes which aren’t really needed and they’ll soon find out when people slow their spending. No likely a Cafe turf war will break out!
The scale of the development was nowhere near the size of St Davids 2 in Cardiff but if that new centre proves to be beneficial perhaps this development should have gone ahead in Aberystwyth?
