How to Better Ones self – Student Competition
It’s that time of year again, the talk of University, A-Levels and Degrees and being a Student that has just finished his first year of University I’m having to think of ways in which I can better myself to stay competitive in today’s Student Market.
All Rounded Student
I think students such as myself need to be all rounded, they need the knowledge of multiple areas, even if they don’t specialise in all these areas, a knowledge of the areas is necessary.
But, how do you become an all rounded student? – What can you do?
Well I think there are different channels which you could look into depending on your course and what you’re into but whatever you find yourself doing, make it interesting, stand out from the crowd, make people want to know more about you and what you’ve gotten up to.
Now I don’t know about you, so I’m just going to mention what I’m doing and what my plan is, hopefully giving you some sorts of ideas to explore.
My Plan of Action
| Go Wales – Work Placements | These are placements which can last up to 8 weeks. You are paid and they have desired outcomes for you being there. Doing a few of these will help you get to know different types of businesses and markets and will help you to make some new contacts. |
| Work Experience - | I’m finding gaining work experience to be tough in what I want to do. My aim is to shadow managers in a variety of businesses to see what their roles and functions are and how they diff depending on the industry you work in. I hope to write a report from this. |
| Hobbies – Web design | I have been very much into web design from a young age and in doing so I have developed new contacts. I designed and setup the Old St Mellons Website (http://www.oldstmellons.co.uk) and in doing so have exploded a whole array of contacts. I even helped win the Calor Gas Village of the Year Communication Award back in 2008!
I have had other part-time work from County Councillors and has even led to the development of the Boys Brigade (Cardiff & the Vale of Glamorgan County Website) http://wales.boys-brigade.org.uk
I hope to continue these efforts and maintain my contacts and presence within the community. |
| Hobbies 2 – Blogging | Lately I have been getting into blogging, right here on my blog. Sounds quite silly really but I have found it really interesting. It has allowed me to easily publish my work, knowledge, ideas and daily thoughts for others to see. This has helped me to develop an increasing online presence.
I will continue you to do this and hope when applying to any business I’ll be able to direct them here so that they may explore my mind further. |
| University – Societies | Right, these’s this society at the University of Aberystwyth, called ‘The Biz’ a business society setup to help students, and even to make money? (Not sure if it’s working haha). I’d like to add my efforts to this and/or setup my own business-like society. I think that this will help to raise my business profile. |
There are probably more things I am doing but my mind is just slow on a Sunday Morning, haha.
I hope that this will give me a firm base so that when I do present myself to employers they will see these efforts, If I get a job through it then I will use that as a platform for developing further.
