Aberystwyth School of Business & Management – Review

I have just completed my first year studying Business & Management at Aberystwyth University. I feel that the year has gone really well but I feel there’s room for improvement.

The First Year is Broken down into the following Modules:

• Introduction to Management
• Managing Finance
• Marketing Principles
• European Economy  (Optional Semester 2)
• Economics Hot Topics (Optional Semester 1)
• Business Environment
• Management Skills (Semester 2)

I’ll write a brief overview of each, giving you an idea of what to expect from the module.

Tutor Groups

Every module has group sessions, You only get a few per semester every two weeks (turnaround) per module. You get broken up into groups of about 15, sometimes told to write or answer some questions before turning up. You get a mark if you turn up which turns into the overall percentage of the first year.

Coursework

Not all modules but some modules have coursework. They are usually essays or reports. In managing finance we did a group report on Morrisons. In Management Skills and Analysis it was a Coursework only module where we did a group report on a Business Game at the end of semester 2. You lose marks for every day you’re late handing it in. Get it in early!

Exams

You may have exams in January or may not. If you need to re-sit any then this will be in August of that year. 40% is the pass rate and you need an average of this to pass the year. If you re-sit any exam then you can only get 40% in the paper even if you get 100%.

Percentages

Don’t forget attendance to tutor groups and coursework can have a percentage which counts to your end of year mark. Don’t forget you could be sitting an exam which is only worth 50% of your module grade so don’t forget to turn up to tutor groups and hand in coursework.
